HUMANITÉ POREUSE AT MAISON DE LA CULTURE NOTRE-DAME-DE-GRÂCE!

February 25th to April 10th, 2022

A meeting of art, microbiology and philosophy, the exhibition Porous Humanity invites us to rethink what it means to be human. Exploring the symbiotic relationship between humans and microorganisms, this exhibition confronts the idea of an autonomous humanity, isolated in its "skin bag", and presents instead a vision of a multispecies humanity; a humanity who, by relinquishing its pretense of exceptionalism, reveals itself in continuity with its environment. Created in collaboration with skin's microorganisms, the living or interactive portraits of Porous Humanity reveal unsuspected universes, so intertwined with our own that it blurs the boundaries of the Human species.

THREE SERIES ARE PRESENTED IN THIS NEW SHOW, INCLUDING THE RECENT TERRAFORMATIONS INSTALLATION!

Januray 26th to November 11th, 2020

In a hybrid approach, at the crossroads of art, philosophy and microbiology, the practice of artist Günes-Hélène Isitan invites us to rethink what it means to be human. A joint collaboration between a photographer and bacterial painters, the three series presented confront the doctrine of human exceptionalism by questioning not only our relationship with invisible but omnipresent microorganisms, but also by exploring the illusory boundaries erected between us and them. Through printed works, multi-species self-portraits, video projection, and live installations, the artist reveals a humanity that is more porous than previously imagined; a humanity that is deeply intertwined with the world that gave birth to it.

HYBRIDITIES:ALMOST OTHER:FINALLY COMING TO MONTREAL!

October 28 to December 9, 2017

After travelling to Sherbrooke, New York and Korea, Günes-Hélène Isitan's Hybridities: Almost Other series is coming for her first solo exhibition to downtown Montreal!

Visual Voice Gallery is delighted to present Hybridities: Almost Other by Montreal biological artist Günes-Hélène Isitan. Isitan presents "multispecies self-portraits" evoking both our human face and our invisible evolutionary counterpart, our microbiota, to suggest a humanity whose skin isn't a limit, a border, but an ever-changing permeable zone. Each artwork is created in a Petri dish, using a photograph and microorganisms taken from her subjects’ faces to create living images. Indeed, through their own agencies, these microorganisms "edit" the photograph by shifting around the inks of the film, dissolving our boundaries while highlighting our hybrid state, both human and microbial, macro and micro, individual and ecosystem.
