Hybridities:
Almost Other
Hybridities: Almost Other offers a reflection on the human-nonhuman continuum through the creation of revealing "multispecies self-portraits". Symbiotic hybrids, we've never actually seen ourselves; that is what inspired me to create these portrait, where our identity and physical borders are literally dissolved under the action of our own invisible ecosystem. Indeed, these artworks were created in a Petri dish, using both a photographic film and microorganisms from my subjects’ faces, in order to “grow” portraits highlighting our hybridity.
Evoking both our human face and our invisible evolutionary counterpart, our microbiota, this series therefore incites a rethinking of what it means to be human beyond anthropocentrism.
